It’s a small world! Today, during our morning walk, my husband, Ray, and I stopped to talk to a neighbor, Dan Pollock. He introduced us to his girlfriend, Ginger Farrell. After chatting a bit we discovered that Ginger is from Pittsfield and her older brother is David Farrell, who is a priest in Peru. What a small world! It’s made even smaller because a couple of days ago Ray and I were talking about the high school class websites. He started one for his Class 1957 Technical High School in Springfield, MA and Paul Venti started one for Class 1957 Pittsfield High School after communicating with Ray. Ray mentioned that he had seen a really nice article about David Farrell who is a priest working in Peru. I mentioned to Ray that David had been the president of Class of 1957. And here a couple of days later, I meet David’s sister! I have only been to one reunion, around 30th I think. And I especially remember talking with David Farrell, Shirley Maxwell, Marlene Wood, Kippy Torrey, Mary Porter, and Flo Kubli. I love the website and I’ve seen lots of people that I’d like to communicate with on the website, but it will have to wait until after the November 4 elections. I’ve been working as a volunteer more than a 40-hour week for the local Democratic party since August 2004. At that time, I decided that if I was going to be complaining about the direction the country was going in, I’d better get off my butt and volunteer. Needless to say, because political parties, like churches, are always in need of volunteers, I became deeply involved. Because of my secretarial skills (the basics gained in Pittsfield High School) and my computer skills (self taught), I was much in demand. I am now the secretary of the Democratic Party of Sarasota County and the database and internal website administrator, and also my Precinct Captain. Yipes! We are working hard to turn Florida into a Blue state (meaning Democratic). My husband of 48 years, Ray Winberg, who I met at GE Ordnance Plant in Pittsfield, has been suffering in silence (He’s a Republican!). Because I’m so preoccupied with my “work”, he’s had to pick up many of the routine tasks around the house. After November 4th, I will get my life back and he will get his companion back. Part of getting my life back will be emailing friends from high school, reading, and watching TV, all of which have been put on hold for far too long. Lucena Knowlton (Lu Winberg)
